BUDGETING FOR HOME MAINTENANCE

As a homeowner, it’s important to plan for routine maintenance as well as unexpected surprises like a broken appliance or a leaky roof.

Experts recommend setting aside at least 1% of your home’s purchase price each year in a separate savings account specifically for home maintenance and repairs. For example, if your home is valued at $300,000, set aside at least $3,000 every year. If you didn't spend it last year - you will end up spending it this year.

It may be easiest for you to spread the amount out in monthly deposits or direct deposit a set amount from each paycheck.

Question: I hear strange sounds coming from my toilet when we aren’t using it. Is my toilet leaking?

Answer: The strange sounds you hear indicate that you have a leak which will likely result in a waste of water and money.

Here are some other signs that you may have a leak in your toilet:

•  If you have to jiggle the handle to make a toilet stop running

•  If you have to hold the handle down to allow the tank to empty

•  If a toilet turns the water on for 15 seconds or so without you touching the handle

If your toilets are more than 15 years old or you have obvious signs of a leak, you should consider updating your toilet to a higher-efficiency model. It will save you money in the long run...and you might even get a rebate from your county government.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Goal: Change existing cabinet to accommodate new flat screen TV.


Solution: We hung the TV, built the cabinet around it, and added a fabric drawer-front to allow the speakers to be mounted out of sight.
